Enrico Piperno had an illustrious Tennis career began when he was just a 17 year old. He won the Gold Medal at the Asian Junior Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. He went on to win a Silver Medal at the 1982 Asian Games held at New Delhi. He was National Hard Court Champion on 6 occasions and was Runner Up at the National Grass Court Championships, a record 7 times. He was National Doubles Champion on 8 occasions and was ranked No.1 in India on the AITA Ranking List.

He retired in 1990 and took up the reins of guiding Leander Paes for two years. During this period, Leander became the No 1 Junior Tennis Player in the World and the winner of the US Open Junior Singles Title.

Enrico Piperno was then selected as the Coach of India’s Davis Cup team, and held that position for 10 consecutive years, spanning 27 consecutive Davis Cup ties. Indian Tennis touched dizzy heights during this period, reaching the Semi Finals of the World Group in 1993, and had spectacular wins over France, Netherlands, Great Britain Switzerland and Chile.

In 1997 Mahesh Bhupathi came calling and Enrico Piperno became Mahesh’s travelling coach, a job that he held for 8 years. During this period, the great combination of Paes and Bhupathi, nicknamed “The Indian Express,” dominated World Doubles, reaching the Finals of all four Grand Slams in 1999.

Enrico Piperno then became India’s Fed Cup Captain in 2001 and helped guide Indian Women’s Tennis for 13 consecutive years with great success. He was also the coach of the Indian Women’s Team at three Asian Games, viz. at Busan 2002, Doha 2006 and Guangzhou in 2010. He also coached the Women’s team at the Commonwealth Games at New Delhi in 2010.

In the year 2009 He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the All India Tennis Association and in the year 2015 he received the Mother Teresa Award for Excellency in Sports & Culture by the Mother Teresa Award Committee.

He was also honoured by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Bandopadhyay with the Guru Kriya Samman Award (highest award in the state in the field of sport) in 2015.
